In this year, 2001, the modern man tends to measure, consider and define his daily victories or defeats more and more fervently through two extremes:

  1. through free will
  1. or through divine      will as considered to be unique and omnipotent.

In the first case the victories and the defeats, sooner or later, lead to different forms of psycho-social alienation, culminating oftener today in suicide.

At the opposite diameter his victories and his defeats inevitably lead to different forms of resignation, culminating today in the recognition of the divine will as a tyrannical and invincible opponent, the tragic consequence being a fatalist and robotized attitude towards life.

The first case, evidently, goes all the way from the ignorance of God, until His complete denial.

In the other case one can easily recognize the Saint Augustine axiomatic conclusion: Da quod iubes et iube quod vis (Give what you order and order what you want / Confessions, X, 31) and all that the Protestantism (the Lutheranism, Calvinism and their derivates) mean in their essence.

I must add, to all I have already said about the divine will, that Islamism is the most fertile soil for religious fanaticism (in Koran, the Islam’s holy book, the killing of an unfaithful is far from being a crime…) And the contemporary terrorist is its perfect fruit.

The computerized man arrives, in the case of the resignation lived in variety of forms, for sure, not to the love for God but to an unconditional submissiveness to God, and certainly he feels a continuous existential fear. Which, whatever definition you may find is fear and it is continuous. And, practically impossible to communicate to others. If it slides into terror then, sooner or later it become hate.

It is of much interest that at a closer glance the radical and extremist behavior is better (auto)definite in the modern societies through their continuous attempt to replace the free will by the idea of legislation (constitution). And the consequence: the idea of social destiny instead of divine will. It seems that it is more practical and comfortable. There will be some who will add reproachfully: but it is democratic and modern.

But even thinking like that we still have a real and inevitable „interests’ conflict” because no matter what the substitutes are, the archetypes and their positions are, and remain, unchanged, being intrinsic to the human being.

So, we can say that we have an existential dilemma which creates today, maybe much more than in the past, sufferings and dramatic effects, even tragic ones, in our lives no matter where in the modern world.

And there are plenty of  proofs if we make, for instance, an analysis of the subjects approached in arts. Let’s look, if you want, to the artistic cinematography of this third millennium beginning. I believe that everybody agree that, alongside the literature, faster in communication and impact although poorer in profoundness and nuances, the 7th art has today the most pronounced historical and documentary character and in the same time is a modulator of the psycho-social behavior. The artistic film is a perfect biunivoque creation of the nowadays life: subject of the testimony and witness of the subject. In other words the creation of the witness and the testimony that creates. You can easily see that at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the third millennium we have alienation films, in so many different forms, of the resignation of any kind. So I can say that artistic film is one of the ideal demonstrations/the indubitable proof/ to sustain and certify our contemporary dilemma because it permits a little bit of meditation… and I can end my hand on my heart: quod erat demonstrandum.

Ok, now it is clear, the dilemma exists. But how can we get out of it?

Because if we ask the classic philosophers and most of all the modern ones we will see that  in an immense majority of cases, through their meditations and sentences, especially applied in a concrete way, we arrive without any doubt at the irrecusably power separation of our universe: on one side is the human will, on the other the divine will.

And as for those philosophers it is not clear that it might exist any kind of relation, either of subordination, either of equality, or complementarity, either of rejection between the parts – it naturally comes in our life the third power, which organizes for us the things around, in any of our existence’s domain:

„free will philosopher” (and it is of no use to name all these „gods”, being in sufficient number before and after the classical betrayal of Marx, Engels and Lenin).

Unfortunately this is a simple but real explanation of the existence of Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong, Kim Il Sung, Ceausescu, Castro, Peron, Pinochet, Saddam Hussein, as well as that of the Nazism, communism,

South America dictatorships and the Islamic terrorism, of the neo-Nazism and anti-Semitism, of the nationalism both neo-communist and religious, of the racial discrimination and all other „good actions” of the last century.

Let’s try to cut the Gordian knot.

I think that the coming out of this dilemma is to accept, to understand and follow the middle way. I mean simply this:

To live in full consciousness of and into coexistence of the divine will and the human free will.

And this modus vivendi it can be beautifully explained/defined only by reading the works of the wise saint theologians like Thomas Aquinas or John the Damascene, and I quote the last:

God foresees everything but he does not predestinate everything! (Dogmatic, II, 30).

But who needs anymore, in these days, saints and true theologian? when „time is money ” has all the chances to become „the unique philosopher” even for the „free will philosopher” which I have already spoken about?

Nevertheless I do not want to be indebted to anyone, even the less to myself.

Evidently the affirmation/the solution I have proposed it has to be explained in the end, hasn’t it?

And as for this story about free will and predestination and the annulment of the torturing dilemma – the final might seem a little pretentious and finally false if it is done also by myself -I invoke the spirit of one of my dearest masters, the saint and the erudite, the wise Christian monk Nicolas Steinhardt.

Here he is, in front of you, he kindly smiles but it is a biting smile too. The silent profoundness of his eyes is lightened. He caresses his white, short beard like that of the Saint Nicholas of the children. And he speaks like that:

– I think that there are two Romanian sayings full of wisdom and humor and, yes, yes, refreshingly present and practical, and yet full of Faith:

  • God gives you but      he does not put Himself into your bag.
  • Till God the      saints are eating you.

– But, he quizzically continues, these are only two sides of the equilateral triangle which if winsomely and diligently rolled can produce the marvelous sphere of our world, that magic, crystal globe which can save us from falling. But about the third, which is missing, I will tell you a good joke, imagined also by the Romanian who laughs at his Jew neighbor as he laughs to himself:

One day, Itzic being ill and extremely unhappy because of his daily problems and the pale joys of his life, looks to the sky, opens his arms and begins crying to God:

– Oh, my God, why don’t you give me too the joy of gaining to the Lottery so I would never complain anymore, oh, oh, oh God????

Suddenly the sky becomes gray and God shouts from above:

– But play, do play first. Itzic!!!

So these are my thoughts and I naturally ask you:

What is a fulfilled life, lived with an acute but evident thirst of inner equilibrium, for the modern man…? Free will or predestination?

Nothing more simple: for anyone of us is the perfect accord with God.
